Part Eight: Drink Spiking Awareness

Arm yourself and your staff with the practical knowledge to tackle drink spiking and safeguard your customers with our latest course.

Between October 1st, 2021, and February 16th, 2022, 394 crimes of spiking in Scotland were recorded.

That’s 394 too many and cases continue to increase.

Our main objective with our new Drink Spiking Awareness course is to train as many hospitality staff as possible, to raise awareness about drink spiking amongst venues, ensuring staff know what they can do to help victims, and minimising the frequency of this horrendous crime in our society.

Because of the wide range of substances used to spike drinks, there are a range of symptoms and signs that somebody has had their drink spiked. This is one of the main points we aim to convey to staff undertaking our new course so that they can identify these signs and quickly take the appropriate course of action.

Our course will also educate on the many steps that venues can put in place to be spike-aware and to minimise the frequency of spiking occurring.

Our CPD accredited course is aimed at licensed trade staff, bar staff, security staff and venue management.

Course content includes but is not limited to:

  • Understand what drugs are used for drink spiking and their side effects.
  • Spot symptoms that a person has been spiked and promptly get help.
  • Safely help a person who has been spiked by the relevant course of action.
  • Remove a drink that you have visibly seen being spiked and contact the relevant authorities.
  • As a team member, reduce the risk of spiking through increased awareness.
  • Explore safeguarding for venues / how to prevent spiking at your venue.

Alongside having the knowledge needed to safeguard your customers, CPD accreditation allows you to be recognised as a Drink Spiking Aware venue, and you can publicise your ongoing mission to create safeguarding for your customers.

There are many misconceptions around drink spiking that our course aims to dispel such as:

• Spiking is only done to women (although approximately 70% of victims are female)

• Spiking is only done by men

• Spiking is only done to alcoholic drinks

• Spiking only happens at night in bars and clubs

Drink spiking can happen to anyone, anywhere, at any time and to any drink.
